Choosing the Best Cycling Rain Jacket: A Quick Guide

October 02, 2023

We've all been there - you're out on a leisurely bike ride, enjoying the scenery and the rush of the wind against your face when suddenly the skies open up. Before you know it, you're soaked to the bone, shivering in the cold, and wishing you'd invested in acycling rain jacket. But not allrain jackets are created equal. Whencycling, you need something that keeps you dry and allows for ventilation, mobility, and visibility.

Key Features to Consider in a Waterproof Riding Coat

When hunting for thebest cycling rain jacket, there are a few key features you'll need to consider in a waterproof riding coat. It's not just about staying dry anymore; moderncycling rain jackets offer much more.

For starters, a goodcycling rain jacketshould be fully waterproof. This means it's made with materials that prevent water from seeping in. Additionally, thejacketshould have taped seams to prevent water from getting in through the stitches. To top it off, it would be beneficial to look out forjackets with a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) coating, which makes water bead up and roll off the jacket's outer layer.

Next, we can't underestimate the importance of breathability. When we're pedalling hard, our bodies generate a lot of heat and sweat. If the jacket isn't breathable, it can become a mobile sauna, which isn't uncomfortable. A breathablejacket allows sweat to escape, keeping us dry from the inside. Manyjackets achieve this by using fabrics with a breathable membrane or by including venting features like zipped armpits.

Let's not forget about fit and comfort. The jacketwe choose should fit us well, not too tight to restrict movement, and not too loose to flap in the wind. A longer back section is also a good feature to look for, as it can provide extra coverage when we're leaning forward on thebike. Somejackets also come with adjustable cuffs and hems, allowing us to customise the fit. And let's not overlook visibility - a goodrain jacket should have reflective detailing for safer rides in low-light conditions. It's worth noting that thebest cycling rain jacket will strike a balance between these features, providing waterproof protection, breathability, and a comfortable fit.

The Role of Style and Storage in Your Selection

While functionality is paramount, style shouldn't be overlooked. After all, if you wear your rain jacketfrequently, you'll want something that looks good on and off thebike. Moderncycling rain jackets come in various colours and designs, so you can express your style while staying dry. Moreover, considerjackets that come with storage options. Pockets that are easily accessible and have waterproof zippers can be a lifesaver. They allow you to store essentials like your phone, keys, and snacks. Somejackets even come with a stowaway pocket, enabling you to pack the jacket, making it compact and easy to carry when therain stops.

Durability and Care: Making the Most of Your Investment

Investing in a high-qualitycycling rain jacket is just the first step. Ensuring it lasts for many seasons requires proper care and attention. When choosing a jacket, look for those made with robust materials that can withstand the wear and tear of regular use. Reinforced areas, especially on the shoulders and back, can increase thejacket's longevity. As for care, always follow the manufacturer's washing instructions. Mostcycling rain jackets can be machine washed, but avoid using fabric softeners as they affect thejacket's waterproofing and breathability properties. Periodically, you might need to reapply a DWR coating to maintain thejacket's water-repelling capabilities. Remember, with the right care, a goodcycling rain jacket can be a long-term companion on your rides, comerain or shine.

Stop bugging me!

I left a review already after repeated emails, and I'm still getting emailed for reviews. Just stop, FFS!

Thankyou

Very quick postage, good product. Continual bothering for a review though. I've had several emails and texts since I ordered. Leaving one to shut them up.

Excellent Product

Been searching for a bib that fits comfortably for long rides as I find a lot of chamois’s don’t sit right and cause chafing. The Tineli Pro Elite drop tail is a perfect fit for long rides without any digging in or chafing. I was so happy that I have purchased a second pair and will be wearing these bibs when cycling Japan in September. Also great not having to strip for a toilet break.
